Winter Arrives in Munnar as Temperature Drops to 6°C; Sub-Zero Chill Expected

Munnar, October 30, 2026: Munnar has begun experiencing the first signs of winter following a gradual retreat of the monsoon rains, with temperatures falling sharply across the hill station. The minimum temperature in Munnar town and Nallathanni dropped to 6°C on Thursday morning, marking the lowest reading of the season so far.

The sudden change in weather has brought a noticeable chill to the high-altitude destination, particularly during the late-night and early-morning hours. The cold is also being felt across surrounding tea plantation areas, where temperatures have reportedly fallen below 5°C in certain locations.

Cold Conditions Spread Across the High Ranges

Kundala and Mattupetty recorded minimum temperatures of around 8°C. Meanwhile, plantation regions including Lakkad, Chenduvara, Chittuvara, Thenmala and Lakshmi experienced significantly colder conditions.

The chilly weather has been accompanied by frost-like formations on grasslands and leaves during the early morning hours. Evening mist and fog have also begun appearing across the hills, adding to the seasonal atmosphere that attracts visitors to Munnar.

Although nighttime temperatures have fallen considerably, daytime conditions remain relatively comfortable, ranging between 20°C and 25°C.

Sub-Zero Temperatures May Follow

Weather observers indicate that temperatures could fall below the freezing point within the coming week if the prevailing conditions continue. Such a development could bring more extensive frost formation across the elevated tea estates and open grasslands.

The transition to colder weather is expected to increase interest among travellers planning winter holidays in Kerala. Munnar traditionally attracts visitors during the colder months for its mist-covered hills, chilly mornings, scenic tea plantations and seasonal frost.

Winter Tourism Season Begins

The arrival of cooler weather signals the beginning of Munnar's popular winter tourism season. Resorts, hotels and homestays across the region are likely to see increased interest from travellers seeking a refreshing escape from warmer destinations.

Visitors planning trips in the coming days are advised to carry warm clothing, particularly for early-morning sightseeing and excursions to higher-altitude locations.

With the possibility of further temperature drops, Munnar is entering one of its most anticipated travel seasons, offering visitors a chance to experience the distinctive winter climate of Kerala's high ranges.
