Munnar Panchayat Steps Up Drive Against Roadside Encroachments

Action aims to improve pedestrian access near Rainbow Bridge and Mattupetty auto stand

Munnar, October 2026: The Munnar grama panchayat has intensified its efforts to remove unauthorised roadside encroachments, clearing stalls that occupied pedestrian footpaths in key areas of the hill station.

The enforcement drive covered locations near Rainbow Bridge and the Mattupetty auto stand, where roadside stalls had obstructed footpaths and made it difficult for pedestrians to move safely. The panchayat has also issued notices to more than 50 roadside vendors as part of its wider campaign to clear encroachments.

The action is intended to improve pedestrian movement and ease congestion in busy parts of Munnar, which attracts large numbers of tourists throughout the year. Footpaths occupied by roadside businesses can force pedestrians onto the carriageway, increasing inconvenience and potential safety risks for both visitors and local residents.

The latest measures reflect the local body's efforts to maintain public spaces and improve the management of commercial activity along busy roads. Further action against unauthorised encroachments may follow as the panchayat proceeds with its enforcement measures.

With Munnar continuing to be a major tourism destination in Kerala, maintaining accessible footpaths and orderly public areas remains important for visitor safety and the overall travel experience.
