Periyar Tiger Reserve Introduces CNG Buses to Promote Eco-Friendly Tourism
Periyar Tiger Reserve in Thekkady has taken another step towards sustainable tourism with the introduction of three compressed natural gas (CNG) buses for transporting visitors within the protected area. The initiative aims to reduce vehicle emissions and minimise the environmental impact of tourist transportation in one of Kerala's important wildlife destinations.
The new buses will operate between the Anavachal parking area and the boat landing, helping visitors reach the boating facility while reducing dependence on conventional fuel-powered vehicles along this route.
The project received ₹88.37 lakh in corporate social responsibility (CSR) support from BPCL Kochi Refinery. The initiative reflects the growing emphasis on adopting cleaner transport solutions in ecologically sensitive areas where tourism activities need to be balanced with wildlife conservation.
Periyar Tiger Reserve, a major attraction for visitors to Thekkady, is known for its forest landscapes, wildlife, boating experiences and rich biodiversity. The introduction of CNG-powered transport is expected to support efforts to make visitor movement more environmentally responsible.
The reserve is also looking at expanding its cleaner transport fleet in the future. Such measures could strengthen Thekkady's position as a destination for responsible tourism while supporting the long-term protection of its natural environment.
The initiative highlights the importance of sustainable mobility in protected areas, where reducing pollution and managing tourist movement are essential to preserving the visitor experience and the surrounding ecosystem.
