Boulder Fall Forces Traffic Restrictions on Adimali–Munnar Highway
Vehicular movement on a section of the Kochi–Dhanushkodi National Highway (NH 85), connecting Adimali and Munnar, was disrupted following a major boulder fall at Second Mile. Authorities imposed traffic restrictions to facilitate the removal of fallen rocks and assess the safety of the affected stretch.
The incident raised concerns about road safety along this important mountain route, which serves as a key access corridor for residents, commercial vehicles and tourists travelling to Munnar. The hilly terrain and exposed slopes along the highway make certain sections vulnerable to rockfalls and landslides, particularly during periods of heavy rain.
Vehicles Diverted Through Alternative Routes
As part of the traffic management measures, vehicles were directed to use alternative routes through Anachal and Iruttukanam while clearance and safety inspections were carried out. Motorists travelling between Adimali and Munnar were advised to follow police instructions and allow additional time for their journeys.
The disruption was particularly significant for tourists heading to Munnar's hotels, resorts, tea plantations and other popular attractions. Tour operators and transport providers were also encouraged to check road conditions before starting trips along the route.
Travellers Advised to Check Road Conditions
The Adimali–Munnar highway is an important connection between the lowlands and the hill station. Rockfalls and slope instability can create unexpected delays and hazardous driving conditions, especially along narrow mountain roads.
Travellers planning to visit Munnar should verify the latest traffic updates with local police and road authorities before departure. Drivers are advised not to approach restricted sections until officials confirm that the route is safe for traffic.
The incident highlights the importance of slope protection, regular monitoring and timely maintenance along the mountainous highway to ensure safer travel for residents and visitors.
