Munnar Records Over 30 Lakh Tourist Visits in 2025; Major Tourism Infrastructure Upgrade Planned
MUNNAR: Kerala's popular hill station Munnar recorded more than 30.86 lakh tourist visits in 2025, reaffirming its position as one of the state's leading tourism destinations. According to official statistics published by the Kerala Tourism Department, the destination received 30,18,598 domestic tourist visits and 67,744 foreign tourist visits during the year.
With increasing tourist footfall placing pressure on existing infrastructure, the Kerala Government is planning a series of tourism development initiatives to improve visitor amenities, strengthen safety measures and promote sustainable tourism management in Munnar.
Tourism Infrastructure Development in the Pipeline
The proposed initiatives focus on addressing major challenges faced by Munnar, particularly traffic congestion, parking shortages, sanitation and waste management.
Plans include developing additional parking facilities, introducing modern public toilets at important tourist locations and improving waste management systems to maintain cleanliness and protect the region's fragile environment.
Authorities are also considering enhanced tourist safety measures and structured training programmes for local tourist guides to improve the overall quality of visitor services.
Road Development and Traffic Management
Traffic congestion continues to be a major concern in Munnar, especially during weekends, public holidays and peak tourism seasons. Improving road infrastructure and implementing better traffic management measures are among the priorities identified by tourism stakeholders.
The possibility of exploring an elevated road system has also emerged as a long-term proposal to ease congestion and improve vehicle movement. Discussions with relevant authorities are expected to examine the feasibility of such infrastructure improvements.
Boost to Munnar's Tourism Economy
The proposed developments are expected to create new opportunities for Munnar's tourism industry. Hotels, resorts, homestays, tour operators, taxi services, restaurants and adventure tourism operators could benefit from improved accessibility and enhanced visitor facilities.
Better infrastructure and visitor management could encourage tourists to extend their stays, explore additional attractions and spend more on local tourism experiences, supporting employment and economic activity in the region.
Sustainable Tourism Remains a Priority
As Munnar continues to attract increasing numbers of visitors, balancing tourism growth with environmental conservation is becoming increasingly important.
The proposed infrastructure initiatives aim to strengthen tourism facilities while protecting the natural beauty, ecological diversity and environmental sustainability of the hill station.
With improved amenities, connectivity and destination management, Munnar is expected to further consolidate its position as a major tourism destination in Kerala and South India.
