MUNNAR, KERALA: A tea estate worker had a narrow escape after a wild elephant charged towards him at the Kannimala Estate Lower Division in Munnar, once again drawing attention to the increasing risks faced by people living and working in plantation areas close to wildlife habitats.

The incident occurred on the morning of September 4, 2026, when two wild elephants entered the tea plantation area. One of the elephants reportedly noticed a worker standing outside the residential quarters and suddenly charged towards him.

Realising the danger, the worker ran to safety as the elephant pursued him for some distance. He managed to escape without injuries. Reports identified the worker as Pandiraj, a resident and plantation worker at the Kannimala Estate Lower Division.

The incident has caused concern among tea estate workers and residents in the Munnar region, where plantations, workers' residential areas and wildlife habitats often exist in proximity.
