NH 85 Closure Disrupts Kochi–Munnar Travel; Traffic Diverted Through Anachal

Munnar, October 20, 2026: Heavy tourist traffic during the ongoing Pooja holidays has added to travel difficulties on the Kochi–Munnar route, where a section of National Highway 85 has been closed following a landslide and soil erosion. The disruption has affected the Neriyamangalam–Munnar stretch, prompting authorities to divert vehicles through Anachal.

The affected section, between Iruttukanam and Randam Mile, reportedly extends for around 13 kilometres. Significant damage near Karadippara viewpoint in Pallivasal panchayat has raised safety concerns, with unstable soil and fallen boulders making parts of the road unsuitable for normal traffic.

Anachal Diversion Faces Heavy Traffic

Vehicles travelling towards Munnar from Thodupuzha are being redirected through Anachal before rejoining the main highway at Randam Mile. The alternative route adds to journey times, and its narrow roads and sharp bends are struggling to accommodate the increased flow of tourist vehicles, particularly during peak hours.

With Munnar experiencing a surge in visitors during the Pooja holiday period, motorists may face substantial delays. Travellers are advised to check the latest traffic arrangements with the police and district authorities before beginning their journey.

Access to some affected areas is reportedly being permitted under restrictions for local residents and vehicles travelling towards Mankulam. Such access remains subject to instructions from the authorities at the site.

Repairs and Road Safety Measures

Restoration work is expected to involve slope stabilisation, removal of loose material, soil correction and resurfacing. The final reopening date will depend on the extent of the damage, progress of repairs and the stability of the hillside.

The incident has also renewed concerns about the vulnerability of roads passing through the Western Ghats, where heavy rainfall, soil erosion and inadequate slope drainage can increase the risk of landslides. Engineers and environmental experts have increasingly emphasised the importance of effective drainage systems, slope protection and environmentally responsible construction in these sensitive areas.

Travel Advisory for Munnar Visitors

The Kochi–Munnar highway is an important route for tourists, local residents and the movement of essential goods. The prolonged disruption could affect travel schedules and tourism-related businesses, especially during the busy holiday season.

Visitors planning trips to Munnar should allow extra travel time, confirm their hotel arrangements and follow official diversion instructions. Motorists should avoid attempting to cross the closed section or approaching unstable slopes until the road is declared safe.
