MUNNAR: Authorities have intensified enforcement against waste-management violations in the Munnar–Chinnakanal tourism belt, with nine establishments fined a total of ₹1.78 lakh during a joint inspection conducted in Chinnakanal.

The inspection was carried out by the Idukki District Enforcement Squad of the Local Self-Government Department in association with the Chinnakanal Grama Panchayat. The enforcement drive focused on improper waste disposal and practices that could affect local water sources and the environment.

Officials identified several violations, including the discharge of untreated wastewater into water sources, burning of plastic waste, and indiscriminate disposal of plastic and food waste.

The establishments found violating waste-management regulations were fined and directed to follow proper waste-disposal practices. The Chinnakanal Grama Panchayat has been tasked with monitoring the establishments to ensure that the violations are not repeated.

Officials said enforcement inspections would be intensified in the coming days, particularly against improper waste disposal, pollution of water sources and the burning of plastic waste.

The action comes at a time when Munnar and its surrounding destinations are experiencing strong tourist activity. Effective waste management is particularly important in the ecologically sensitive high-range region, where tourism-related waste and wastewater can place additional pressure on natural resources.
