Munnar : The water level in the Idukki reservoir has risen sharply following heavy rainfall across the high-range and forest areas of Idukki district. As of August 12, 2026, the reservoir level reached 2,355.06 feet, with storage approaching 50% of its total capacity. Around ten days earlier, the water level stood at approximately 2,330 feet. Continued monsoon showers across the catchment areas subsequently increased inflow into the reservoir, resulting in a rise of nearly 25 feet within ten days. The increase comes after comparatively deficient rainfall during June and July had kept reservoir levels lower. Despite the recent rise, the reservoir remains below the level recorded during the corresponding period last year. On the same date in 2025, the water level was 2,376.84 feet. Kerala State Electricity Board officials are closely monitoring rainfall, inflow and reservoir levels as the monsoon continues. Officials have stated that there is no immediate cause for concern and that the present inflow should help support hydroelectric power generation without creating a major power-management issue. The improved water level is an encouraging development for Idukki district following the weaker rainfall recorded during the early part of the monsoon season.
